Alex and Dylan’s Portland Art Museum wedding blended timeless elegance with playful safari-inspired details, including custom signage featuring illustrated lions, elephants, and giraffes.
One of my favorite parts of designing custom wedding signage is seeing how all the details come together on the wedding day. For Alex and Dylan’s wedding, the design story was especially fun because it balanced classic elegance with a playful twist.
Working alongside Barbara with BLC Events and the couple’s stationery designer, Crave Design, my goal was to make sure all of the wedding signage felt cohesive with their invitation suite — from the fonts to the overall layout and materials. But we also added some whimsical design elements that made the whole celebration feel personal and unexpected.
Adding Whimsical Animal Illustrations
While the overall look of the wedding leaned classic and refined, there were hints of the fun to come in the invitation suite, and we carried them through to the signage: illustrated African animals.
You could spot a giraffe peeking over the seating chart display, a lion featured on the cocktail signage, and an elephant greeting guests on the welcome sign.
These illustrations added personality to make the signage feel unique without overwhelming the elegant design. It was the perfect balance of timeless and playful.
A Soft, Neutral Ceremony Space
The ceremony space was designed entirely in whites, creams, and soft neutrals, creating a romantic and calming atmosphere for guests as they arrived.
Flowing ivory drapery, delicate florals, and simple signage created an environment that felt refined and serene. The welcome sign and ceremony details were intentionally minimal so they blended beautifully with the soft palette of the space.
A Surprise Transition into the Reception
One of the most exciting design moments of the day happened when guests entered the reception. After the neutral ceremony palette, the reception space introduced vibrant color — especially shades of pink. The shift in color created a dramatic and fun transition that energized the room.
Pink table numbers, colorful florals, and lively cocktail signage helped bring the space to life while still tying back to the clean typography used throughout the day.
Guests experienced the wedding almost like a story unfolding — starting with soft romance and transitioning into a party!
Why Wedding Signage Matters
Thoughtfully designed day-of wedding signage can completely elevate the guest experience. When fonts, materials, and layouts carry through from the invitations to the event itself, the entire wedding feels more intentional and refined.
Alex and Dylan’s celebration was a perfect example of how cohesive design — combined with a few playful details — can create something truly memorable.
